
What is food traceability?
Traceability is the capability to trace something. In the case of Sustainable food production, food traceability ensures that foods are traced and tracked throughout the supply chain.
What are food traceability systems?
Food traceability systems or solutions are seen as an essential part of maintaining food safety. These systems are introduced and enforced in order to trace the history of a product. It is recognised as an effective measure to identify potential problems concerning issues such as quality and source and increases the transparency of the product.
Requirements
Friend of the Earth requirements for the traceability of food products that companies must meet for obtaining certification include:
- The correct identification of the certified product and the physical separation from non-certified products;
- The presence of a company traceability system suitable for the identification of products for which certification is required and the annual evaluation of its correct functioning;
- Continual and constant training, on the Friend of the Earth requirements, to operators involved in the maintenance of traceability;
- The presence of a product recall/withdrawal procedure.
